After our visits to the Berber granaries, we stopped at the hilltop ruins of the Berber village of Chenini. The construction here was similar to that of the granaries, but it required a significant climb up the hill to visit the ruins. Many of the structures here are carved into the hillside as caves, and some have been modernized as shops and restaurants. But most of the structures on the very top of the hill are in ruins. On the way to the top, our trip leader took us into a cave that was used as an olive mill to produce olive oil. The views from the top were panoramic and impressive, looking out over the barren desert landscape.

The oldest structures here date to the 12th century, and while the current population is dwindling rapidly, there are still some residents in this ancient village. On our way back down from the top of the ridge, we stopped in a restaurant in one of the modernized structures and had lunch.
